So how many people can't update their iPad 1s? My wife's 16GB wifi model updated with no problem. My 64GB wifi model still says "device incompatible with this build". No amount of reseting or restoring will change that.

I reckon the zune will be in the same situation as the sony clie. Its gonna be an amazing product with a million more features than an ipod, but will millions of people buy. Just as sony couldnt compete with palm, microsoft cant compete with apple, but the xbox is very impressive for a software company so im not going to underestimate microsoft.

Apple releases products in predictable time frames. iPhone 5 will be released in June.
Apple has changed their predictability in the past. They're not going to handcuff them self to past release schedules or what talking heads expect. It’s in their (and our) interest for them to release new hardware when it’s ready.

I think the lack of a March/April iOS 5 preview pretty much confirmed that. No new OS, no new iPhone. If we get the preview in June at WWDC, that means we get new hardware in September, which is likely to be the launch date of iOS 5.
This again is based off of Apple always shipping a new OS with a new iPhone.

I think there is a hole in this argument/dream. Apple has spent considerable time and marketing money in the Made for iPod campaign that centers arounds the dock connector. They have created the Universal dock and inserts for all recent iPods, promising to keep these updated with all new iPods in the foreseeable future. Therefore, I seriously doubt these new no touch iPods wouldn't have at least a dock connector. .
The new Nike-Apple collaboration shows how Apple could get around this - simply a female dock receptacle, bluetooth (or whatever) configured to replace the physical dock connection. It would work for automobile interfaces, the iPhoto connection etc.
Apple could make a ton of cash "this simple connector - only available from Apple - allows all your iPod accessories to communicate with our new iMonolith iPod"... very 2001:)

I suspect the sales figures of the iPhone 4 and 3GS probably surpass the top 8-10 Android devices combined.

The "Verizon" iPhone is exactly the same hardware as would be used with Sprint. You could actually use one on Sprint's network today if they allowed you to activate non-Sprint devices. AFAIK, they still do not allow that, which really is a shame. With their new GV features and relatively reasonable prices, I would gladly buy a CDMA iPhone and use it on Sprint.

That's what makes all the rancor about this so funny. Depending on the reading of this EULA provision, Apple's limits are still as, or more, restrictive than Microsoft's.
But at least they are clear. And, last time I checked OS X wasn't far of the 99$ mark for a 5 instance home license. Compare that with Micro$oft:p :p
